Zen Away From Home

Updated: Jul 7, 2020

In the fall of 2017 after an extensive cosmetic home renovation (paint, new furniture and decor items) it was time to focus my attention on my office. I loved how my home space made me feel and since I spend a lot of time at work, it made sense for me to try and create a beautiful and calming space there, too.

My office is in an office building at the end of a driveway off of a very busy road. Chain stores, boutique shops, restaurants, apartments, and an outdoor mall are all very close by. Traffic is often atrocious. The building itself was built in the 80’s and is quite dated and tired. Most of the business on my floor are run and employed by men, so they don’t care so much about the way their office looks through the window (don’t get me started on how much the janky and crooked blinds bother me every day when I walk past.)

But then. You round the corner and peek through the glass door into our space. And all the traffic woes, and old carpet, and wonky blinds no longer matter.

I had become somewhat obsessed with a paint color people were dubbing “Millennial Pink.” I knew I wanted to incorporate it at work because living with all boys in my house, it probably would not have been appreciated there. I found a Benjamin Moore color called Gentle Blush and just did one accent wall. The rest of the room I did in Stonington Gray because I loved it so much at home.

I chose this little mid century modern love seat from Wayfair. It was a perfect size for the space and it’s quite comfortable. The end table and the coffee table are also from Wayfair. Then on to the hunt for “Millennial Pink” and gold decor items which were everywhere. I guess I was decorating on trend.

I was a bit nervous about making the space too feminine since I do have quite a few male clients, but considering I share the space with a cosmetologist who does nails and hair and make up for weddings, I thought the more observant nature of women would appreciate it, while the men could certainly tolerate it. It wouldn’t be as though they would stop coming because the office got “too girly.”

My desk is where I conduct all my client business as well as where I spend my time in between clients, so it had to be a very functional work space. I don’t have a lot of storage furniture pieces and I don’t like clutter so the different storage boxes work well. ( I still need to label them- I inevitably end up looking in every single one before finding what I need.)

The geek in me…

Since the common space is so feminine, I decided my treatment room would be a bit more on the neutral side. I chose sea greens and turquoise and with all the natural light I get in this room, it is really nice. My vision of a tranquil space was realized.

I love my office space and it makes me feel happy and calm to be there. I love that when clients come early, they never mind waiting. They tell me it makes them feel good to be there, it they love the way it looks and smells and sets the scene for the amazing service they are there to receive.
